An 84-year-old woman in Massapequa, NY was hospitalized after being brutally stabbed in her own home, and her family says the alleged attacker is her home health aide.

The horrifying incident took place this week at the woman’s residence on Bay Drive near Merrick Road. According to her son, the home health aide arrived for her morning shift and immediately noticed blood and a knife on the floor. The elderly woman was found with stab wounds to her chest and rushed to a local hospital, where she underwent surgery. Fortunately, her son said she is expected to survive.

Surveillance footage reportedly shows the overnight home health aide climbing into bed with the victim before the stabbing occurred. After the attack, the aide allegedly tried to flee in a vehicle but crashed in the driveway. She then abandoned the car and ran from the scene.

No arrests have been made so far, and authorities are still working to determine a motive. Police were seen in the neighborhood throughout the day collecting evidence, including reviewing surveillance footage.

As a precaution, nearby Massapequa High School and Birch Lane Elementary School were placed on a secure lockdown for about 90 minutes while officers investigated.

The shocking attack has left the community on edge, as residents grapple with the idea that someone entrusted with care could commit such a violent act.
